October became the National Month of Science, Technology and Innovation. The date, which will now be celebrated every year, was instituted by Decree No. 10.497/2020.
And in the first edition of the date is scheduled a series of activities, programs and lectures, throughout the country, in the next 30 days, with the aim of disseminating actions of science and technology and make the subject increasingly accessible to the population. The idea is to inspire the whole family, especially children and youth, thus promoting improvements in people's quality of life.
"It is important this scientific proximity of the population, especially young people, so that they see in science a vision of their future, the possibilities that lie ahead," said Minister Marcos Pontes.
"It's no use having the biggest equipment on the planet if we don't have young people interested in science and technology, if we don't have the population aware of what happens with science and technology, of how this can improve their lives," he said.
The date also wants to promote the debate about the importance of scientific impacts around the world. The minister highlighted that this year, with Covid-19, science and technology have overcome barriers and are closer to the population.
"A situation like that of Covid, is the critical situation that we have to deal with now. We see the need for science as the only weapon to defeat this enemy, which is the virus itself, whether in the production of medicines, vaccines, tests and to know this disease so that we can better protect our population, the population of the planet as a whole," added Marcos Pontes.
And to mark the National Month of Science, Technology and Innovations, the José Reis Award for Scientific and Technological Disclosure was delivered this Friday (2), a recognition to journalists, researchers, writers and institutions that contribute to the dissemination of Brazilian science. The winner is the journalist Carlos Fioravanti, from the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation. The award is an action of CNPQ, the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development.
